For the final GG of 2009 five volunteers created a hedge alongside the northern fence line at the lower newt pond.
We green hedged a couple of willow trees and augmented these with dead hedging.
We also removed a number of tree guards at the back of the pond. These spiral type guards have severely deformed the bases of a number of the trees
six volunteers took a stroll around the northern half of the reserve reviewing what we had done during the past year and identifying tasks for 2010. At an appropriate time we adjourned to the Three Brooks to discuss our findings.
Today seven volunteers removed tree guards from the west/north west side of the ‘Tump’. There are a surprising number of trees here, lots of Silver Birch and Common Beech. Unfortunately these types of tree have branches very close to the ground and a lot of bending and stretching was required. Despite clearing a great pile of guards there are still many left to due at some time. It is important because the guards, particularly the spiral type, are beginning to become embedded in the trunks of the trees.
Next week we are going for a walk around the reserve to review this year’s work and try to spot next year’s.
We spent most of a largely soggy day dealing with the excess growth in the pond near the tank bridge.
Today seven volunteers cleaned up Dewfalls Pond. We removed litter from around the pond and the adjacent hedgerows, cleared back some of the bramble and one pressed man donned waders and cleared out litter, dead branches, building materials etc. from the pond itself - and my waders stayed bone dry. Thanks again to Quentin for providing the transport to the site. Next week we will be removing tree guards from trees on the western slope of the tump.
